Why listen to music?

Finals week. I could be wrong but I would safely bet my inheritance that 75% of any student reading this, which is probably only like 1 person, has been feeling a lot of pressure and stress about finals. Anyway, as I was stressing out today about my finals and my paper I just turned my ipod up and forgot about everything for about an hour. now this probably isn’t the best thing to do in my current situation but after that hour i felt really good and I continued working on my paper stress free. What I’m trying to say is that to me, music is an excellent therapy. Now my blog is mostly about rock n roll but whenever your feeling stressed out listen to your favorite music, no matter what kind, and I bet you will feel better!

No Steven Tyler??

Some of you probably know of Aerosmith. They are one of the best biggest American Rock bands ever. It is sad to say that Steven Tyler, the lead singer of Aerosmith, has apperently quit the band. Now if any of you have ever listened to Aerosmith you have noticed that his voice is…..unique. I can hardly believe that anyone would be able to replace Steven Tyler. You never know, this could be a fluke thing, maybe an argument within the band. Hopefully they get it figured out and Aerosmith will get back on the road.

My First Listen To Black Stone Cherry

So I was on youtube the other day and came across some videos for the band called Black Stone Cherry. I am not usually a fan of “heavier” rock but these guys are awesome! They have probably jumped up to one of my favorite bands. Like I said they are kind of “heavy” but you can definitely hear blues, southern rock, and even country influences. In fact, the drummers’ dad and uncle are members of the country/southern rock band Kentucky Headhunters. You should check them out too. It turns out that Black Stone Cherry is touring with Lynyrd Skynyrd and they are going to be in Evansville tonight, and yours truly is going to be there!!!

Favorite Band

Lynyrd Skynyrd is my favorite band. Everyone knows of their anthems like “sweet home alabama” and “freebird” but there is a whole different side of Skynyrd that most people never hear. Songs like “Made in the Shade” which is old school country, or “the ballad of Curtis Leow” an old blues man that would play his guitar, or “four walls of raiford” a story of a soldier that has been framed for murder and is running for his life, the latter two are almost delta blues, show that Skynyrd is more than just a bunch of rowdy southern rockers. Another reason they are my favorite is because they play for the fans. The current Skynyrd lineup contains only one original member, there is one other original member that doesn’t play with them, and the other 5 are dead. They keep playing for the music and the fans. The next time you are surfing the internet look up some less known Skynyrd songs and see what you think.

The Crossroads

So in my first blog I said I would continue on about the blues. So that’s what I am going to do. I realize that most people, especially my age do not necessarily like the blues. But how many people have heard the Kanye West song “Gold digger”? A LOT! What I think is cool and what a lot of people don’t know is that one of the main lines in that song is actually from a Ray Charles song. “she give me money, when i’m in need” is a line from “I Got A Woman” Now of course, since I am educating you about the blues and rocknroll, I recommend that everyone listen to Ray Charles. He was one of the best singers of all time according to Rolling Stone magazine, and personally he is one of my favorite artists. So blues is everywhere, you’ve probably heard some blues even if you don’t know it. The Crossroads. Something about the blues that you probably don’t know. Legend has it that in Mississippi in the late teens and early twenties you could go to the crossroads and make a deal with the devil. Rumor has it the Robert Johnson made this deal and that is what made him the guitar player that he was. You can listen to his song “crossroads”, also, Cream, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and many others have covered it. There is also a movie called Crossroads. Not the one with Britney Spears. It was made in the 80′s and stars Ralph Machio. I also recommend seeing this movie as it is one of my favorites. I said in the first blog that I would also tell you my favorite band. Lynyrd Skynyrd. And I’ll go more in depth next time.

the blogging experience

Before this class started, I wasn’t really sure what blogging was. I think blogging is a pretty neat way to talk about something or express your views or opinions. It is also a great way to share you knowledge about a given subject, with the readers of your blog. The only drawback to blogging, in my opinion, is time. Sometimes when I’m doing homework I forget that I need to blog. Overall, I like blogging, I think it is a creative way to get students to utilize the internet to discuss things.

Family Ties

You may wonder why this is called “Family Ties”, I am using that term in the way that rock n roll ties to different kinds of music. Of course today there are all kinds of different music like heavy metal, hardcore, emo, scremo, classic rock, punk rock, and many more. However all of these bands where influenced by bands like The Beatles, The Yardbirds, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Animals, Free, and many more. Taking it back even one step further, all of these bands were influenced by old American Bluesmen. Guys like Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Son House, Bo Diddley, Little Walter, John Lee Hooker, Howlin’ Wolf, and many that are unspoken, are the grandfathers of modern rock n roll. These early “rock n roll” bands took the old blues songs and “electrified” them to a whole new audience. Now blues and rock n roll were not limited to black musicians in the south. Next time I’ll go a little more in depth with blues and rock n roll and tell you who my favorite band of all time is.
